When to use break-even calculator

  • Estimate the sales volume needed for a new product.
  • Compare pricing options at a fixed cost base.

How it works

Contribution per unit = selling price − variable cost. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit. Whole units are rounded up.

Supported inputs and limits

Assumes one product, constant price and constant variable cost. Price must exceed variable cost. Mixed products, capacity changes and tax require a more detailed model.

Common questions

Why round the result up?

If partial units cannot be sold, rounding down leaves some fixed costs uncovered.

What if price is below variable cost?

Each sale adds a loss, so no finite sales volume covers fixed costs in this model.
